Strawberry Growing Tips

Strawberries are a delicious fruit to eat and a fun, and very easy, fruit to grow and harvest.  There are three main types of strawberries: the summer bearing, the perpetual bearing (or the ever bearing), and the alpine. All of these three different kinds of strawberries grow under pretty much the same growing conditions.

They are most plentiful if grown in mild temperature climates. However, there are some varieties of strawberries that have been known to grow from such extremes as the cold of Alaska to the heat of Florida. So, there is basically one set of strawberry growing tips that applies to all strawberries.

Strawberries can grow in virtually any type of soil, just as long as that soil is located in a place that allows for full sunlight to bath the plants with proper air ventilation and there is also very adequate drainage. A location on a gentle south-facing slope with a pH level of 5.5 to 6.5 is ideal.

But really, it is possible for strawberries to be grown practically anywhere, especially if you choose to do so on raised beds, or in containers. The thing is, if you desire the tastiest strawberries possible, it is best that you grow your plants in areas where the days are sunny and warm and where the nights are cool.

Since strawberry plants need a lot of space for their root system, one of the most important strawberry growing tips you can follow is to make sure that you are able to utilize a depth of at least one foot for your strawberry patch, planting the plants about five to seven inches. Also, the plants will need some space, so it is also best that you place them at least eight inches apart in rows.

When you decide to fertilize your strawberries, another of the more important strawberry growing tips you should be aware of are, one, making sure to use only balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-0) and two, making sure never to over-fertilize. About one pound per one hundred square feet is plenty. Following these basic beginning steps will help you to harvest a nice strawberry crop.
