No Garden Needed: Grow Strawberries In Strawberry Pots

Strawberries are one of the undeniable joys of summer.  The sweet, succulent red berries are often described as "nature's dessert" and indeed have the ability to make many dishes and desserts more delicious.  They are ever-popular to grow, and in fact, in some areas, entire farms are devoted strictly to the green, leafy plants.  However, it is not necessary to have a farm or even a garden to enjoy homegrown strawberries.  Container gardening makes it possible to grow strawberries in strawberry pots!

Strawberry pots are specially designed to properly grow these popular and somewhat finicky plants.  The hallmark of a strawberry pot, as opposed to a regular flower or plant pot, are the pockets that jut out from the sides.  Designed to grow additional plants that spring up as the original plants mature, they make for beautiful garden additions, and some people plant them with strawberry plants right from the beginning.  A strawberry pot will also be equipped with adequate drainage.  This is extremely important since strawberry plants do not do well with excess moisture, and drainage is essential to growing healthy plants.  Aside from proper pots and good drainage, what else is important to know in order to grow strawberries in strawberry pots?

A very important consideration is choosing the right plant for your climate.  Seasonal plants, which bear fruit only for a few weeks each year (mostly in June), are the best choices for Northern or colder climates.  In warmer climates, ever-bearing plants can be used to grow strawberries in strawberry pots.  These plants produce a crop either twice per year or daily from June to September, depending on the plant.  Another important factor is placement of the plants.  Strawberry plants need at least six hours of sunlight each day in order to thrive and grow fruit.  This usually eliminates the possibility of an indoor strawberry plant, so plan to keep the containers outside.

In order to grow strawberries in strawberry pots, you'll need rich soil, and it will be best to mix organic fertilizer into your potting soil.  As previously mentioned, strawberry plants are sensitive to moisture, so be careful not to over-water.  The plants should only be watered when the top half inch of the soil is dry to the touch.  A rainy season may well produce an inferior strawberry crop, but at least container gardening offers a bit more control than growing the plants in a garden does!
