Anyone who has ever had the chance to compare a fresh strawberry to one from the local supermarket, knows that there is simply no contest! The store bought strawberries cannot even touch the natural sweetness of a fresh strawberry.

So why don't more people grow their own strawberries? You do not even find them growing too often in a garden along with other fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of us make a trip to a local strawberry patch to get our fresh berries, if there is one. But, would more people attempt to grow their own of they knew how to take care of a strawberry plant?

Strawberries are not a foreign fruit with mysterious growing habits. They are a fruit that needs lots of water and they prefer being watered early in the day. They do not get along with others, therefore it is wise to keep weeds away because a strawberry plant will not compete with other plants.

They do well with a cooler soil; a mulch is recommended because it will help keep the soil clean and moist and keep the weeds away. It is also recommended that strawberry plants be fed regularly with fertilizer to ensure a good crop.

Though it does take some special attention, and a little extra time to coax your strawberry plants into producing, it is well worth it. Learning how to take care of a strawberry plant is not difficult, but it does require effort.

Your hard work and attention will pay off when you take your first bite of a homegrown, succulent, sweet strawberry. Never again will you buy store bought strawberries when you taste the strawberries that your own hands have produced, the strawberry patch you visit will be your own and the basket you fill will be full of beautiful red strawberries.
