Beyond The Produce Department: Where Are Strawberries Grown?

With the advent of the modern supermarket, it's nearly second nature for children to assume that fruits and vegetables come from the produce department, unless they are exposed to actual gardening at some point in their lives. One of the most rewarding plants to grow in a home garden is a strawberry plant.  Because they produce such delicious treats, strawberry plants are sure to please even the most picky eaters.

In order to successfully plant a strawberry garden, it's vital to understand how and where are strawberries grown? This article will provide the answer to the "where are strawberries grown" question.

Strawberries can be grown in most climates, and most countries around the world have some sort of strawberry growing season.  That being said, they do tend to fare best in cool conditions without a lot of excess moisture.

Strawberry plants need a good bit of moisture in order to become established, but once established, too much moisture can cause the crop to spoil before it's picked. Strawberry plants can be grown in farms, in greenhouses, in gardens, and even in containers.

Container gardening is extremely popular, as the workload involved is way lighter than it would be to maintain a traditional garden.  Strawberry plants can be grown in strawberry pots, in old tires, in regular flower pots, and in nearly anything that provides adequate soil and drainage.

Some people like to use hanging pots; others prefer traditional, stationary containers. Another important consideration in answering the question, where are strawberries grown, is finding the right type of soil.

In a garden, the soil should be of a sandy composition and should allow for adequate drainage.  Too much standing water can cause mold in the plants and can ruin the fruit.  Soil should ideally be of a pH ranging from six to seven, and should be fortified with organic soil matter in the form of compost, fertilizer, or organic soil mixed in with the naturally occurring dirt in the garden.

Strawberry plants will need at least six hours of sunlight daily, and should be planted either in the fall or in early spring, while the weather is still cool. This allows for the plant to take advantage of the cool spring months when the crops will produce the best fruit.
